Ethan Katz-Bassett, an associate professor of electrical engineering, has received the 2019 SIGCOMM Rising Star Award. Katz-Bassett was cited for his outstanding research contributions to the field of communication networks, as well as the depth, impact, and novelty of his contributions. The award recognizes individuals who’ve made substantial research contributions to the field of communication networks within 10 years of receiving their PhD.

Katz-Bassett’s primary interests are in networks and distributed systems. In many ways the artifact of another era, the internet’s infrastructure can struggle to support emerging use cases, even as it becomes ever more central to modern global society. Katz-Bassett works with his team to better understand and improve its measurement, routing, and content delivery.

"I'm honored to receive this award from my research community. I became a faculty member because of how much I enjoy working with students, and this award is a gratifying recognition of the high-impact research my students and I have conducted,” says Katz-Bassett, who is also an affiliate in the computer science department.

Jitu Padhye, a principal researcher at Microsoft, and Vishal Misra, a computer science professor at Columbia Engineering, nominated Katz-Bassett for the award. "[Ethan is a] creative researcher whose ideas are part of cutting edge industrial deployments, a mentor, advisor and teacher, and finally someone who contributes to the SIGCOMM community enormously in terms of service,” wrote Misra.

Before joining Columbia University faculty, Katz-Bassett served as the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Early Career Chair in the computer science department at the University of Southern California.
