Department Overview

By equipping students to analyze problems and design creative, workable solutions to modern-day challenges, the Department of Chemical Engineering at Columbia University addresses important global problems through the development and application of new knowledge, new processes, and new products. Our program is one of the oldest in the country and we are proud of our leadership in improving health, assuring energy sustainability, and protecting the environment.

In addition to undergraduate programs in chemical engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). These programs are flexible, with a choice from among many concentrations, and with a sufficient number of elective courses to allow each student to concentrate in his or her area of interest. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for admission to the department.

Departmental research tackles some of the most important challenges of society today through functional and applied research. The interdisciplinary environment of our department results in innovative research, including:

  • Producing chemicals from CO2 using renewable electricity
  • Designing novel soft materials
  • Creating new energy technologies and assessing their environmental impacts
  • Developing new technologies to study problems in genomics
