11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
"Science & Technology at the Nation’s Brightest Synchrotron Source NSLS-II"
Qun Shen
Deputy Director for Science
National Synchrotron Light Source II, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY 11973, USA
National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is one of the newest synchrotron facilities in operations in the world. As a brand-new facility on a green-field site, NSLS-II offers state-of-the-art characteristics in high photon brightness and coherence, broad spectral coverage from infrared to hard X-rays, exceptional stability in photon sources and environment, and an excellent facility infrastructure to enable development of long beamlines and other capabilities. NSLS-II started its operations in the fall of 2014, and currently has twenty-six beamlines in operations with two more beamlines by the end of 2018.
In this seminar, I will first give an introduction to synchrotron light sources in general and their dramatic worldwide growth in the past decades. I will discuss a number of scientific drivers for this growth and the key technologies that enabled this growth. Then I will present an overview of the NSLS-II facility and its scientific portfolio that covers a wide range of research disciplines from condensed-matter and materials physics, to chemical and engineering materials and nanosciences, to geo-environmental and biosciences. I will highlight a few most recent research examples to illustrate these scientific activities. Finally, I will provide an outlook of this fast-evolving field and our strategic R&D directions to further enhance the X-ray technologies and the photon source that will keep NSLS-II at the cutting-edge.
During the talk, I will also highlight a few research projects at NSLS-II that may be of interests for highly motivated Ph.D students to pursue as part their thesis research. For more information, please contact me at [email protected].
