"Los Alamos National Laboratory:History and 21st century materials challenges"
Los Alamos National Laboratory, located in Northern New Mexico, is one of three national laboratories with responsibility for the safety, security, and reliability of the nuclear stockpile. This talk will briefly describe LANL history and then describe some of the current materials challenges inherent in managing the nuclear stockpile. The talk will highlight the perennial need for flexible, reduced-cost, product-based solutions for the control of structure, properties and performance in a range of materials. At LANL, modeling has always been an integral part of the certification process and recent advances in exascale computing offer promise for accelerating qualification of new processes and materials. However validation of new models, particularly those focused on the mesoscale, where interfaces, defects, and microstructure determine performance, requires experimental data of unparalleled temporal and spatial resolution. Over the last decade many of these requirements have been satisfied by measurements at light sources, enabled by a revolution in performance. This talk will describe some recent examples of LANL research performed at light sources and close with speculation about the technical directions that will be the focus over the next decade.
