"MJO prediction: Current status and challenges"

Speaker: Hyemi Kim (SUNY Stony Brook)

Abstract: The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a special type of organized tropical convection which is distinct from other forms by its vast horizontal scale, sub-seasonal variability, and propagation characteristics. Enhanced or suppressed convection associated with the MJO affects global weather and climate, thereby providing a source of global sub-seasonal predictability. Therefore, skillful prediction of the MJO represents a key objective for sub-seasonal prediction. Considerable efforts have been made on the MJO prediction over the past decades. In this talk, a review of recent progress, current status, and future challenges in MJO prediction will be discussed.
