To kick off the new academic year, Dean Mary C. Boyce officially welcomed back faculty to the School by hosting a reception September 18 in Carleton Lounge. Noting that she feels privileged to join the School as it gears up to celebrate its 150th anniversary and prepare for a period of growth, she underscored that it is an exciting and pivotal moment for engineering, calling it a Renaissance.

“This Engineering Renaissance is taking place at Columbia, in the City of New York, in the nation, and across the globe. The importance of engineering and applied sciences is recognized broadly by society due to our tangible impact on the many challenges facing the world today,” she said.

In introducing the new professors who joined the faculty in 2013, Boyce also shared that the School has launched 20 faculty searches this academic year. “Talent attracts talent,” she said, “and so we are well positioned for further elevating the greatness and the impact of SEAS and all of the departments within SEAS. I am very optimistic about our future.”
