William E. Bailey works in the emerging field of spintronics, which measures and manipulates an electron’s spin as opposed to its charge. Advances in spintronics help create better performing electronics that are faster and can store more data, while using power with greater efficiency. 

Research Interests

Nanoscale magnetic films and heterostructures, materials issues in spin-polarized transport, materials engineering of magnetic dynamics

Building on his research in magnetic thin films and heterostructures (ultrathin films of stacked materials), he is particularly interested in finding new functional properties in heterostructures of ferromagnets with other materials (metals, insulators, semiconductors). In recent years, his group has been investigating the possibility of controlling the flow of “pure” spin currents (without charge, or electrical currents) in ferromagnetic heterostructures. His lab specializes in high-speed/high-frequency magnetization dynamics in sheet-level films and has developed unique tools in magnetic materials deposition. He is also interested in the design of magnetic materials with reduced energy loss for computing applications. His research delves into nanoscale magnetic films and heterostructures, materials issues in spin polarized transport, and materials engineering of magnetic dynamics.

Bailey obtained a ScB from Brown in 1993, a MS from Stanford in 1995, and a PhD from Stanford in 1999. Prior to joining Columbia Engineering, he held a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado. Honors for his research include the National Science Foundation CAREER and Army Research Office Young Investigator awards.
