Steven's interest in computer science originates from his adventures tinkering video games from as early as grade 4. Having been exposed to computer logic so early in his life, Steven independently studied mathematics and programming as needed for his games—but also to satiate his growing appetite for computer science. At Burnaby North, Steven pursued his interests in CS and math by coaching the school's Math Challengers (a Canadian equivalent of Mathcounts) team and programming club. Steven has also qualified for and received honors in several of Canada's Olympiads in math and computer science.

Outside of his academic pursuits in math and CS, Steven has volunteered for several years at Free Geek, an e-waste ethical recycling depot, and has co-captained his school's Reach for the Top trivia team. Steven also has a passion for music and has played piano for 8 years as well as tuba in his school band. In college, Steven continues his pursuit of game development by inviting speakers and hosting development competitions as the president of newly officialized Columbia Game Development and Design (CUGD).
