Bahram Jalali

’86, ’87, ’89; NORTHROP-GRUMMAN OPTOELECTRONICS CHAIR OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, UCLA, ELECTED MEMBER OF THE NAE, FANG LU ENDOWED CHAIR

Dr. Jalali is UCLA Samueli School of Engineering's Fang Lu Endowed Chair in Engineering holding joint appointments in the Bioengineering Department, and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI). He joined the faculty of UCLA in 1993. From 1988 to 1992, he worked at the Physics Research Division of Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors. He holds 32 U.S patents and 11 foreign patents. His innovations have led to the founding of three successful start-up companies. Jalali was the Founder and CEO of Cognet Microsystems, a Los Angeles based fiber optic component company acquired by Intel in 2001.

Dr. Jalali has made landmark advances in silicon photonics. His laboratory has pioneered two qualitatively new approaches to imaging: the Time Stretch camera and the radio frequency fluorescent camera, methods that enable nonstop measurements at record speed without using a camera. These imaging technologies have opened up applications in cell biology and diagnostics and the discovery of ultrafast laser phenomena.
