Application Instructions

Summer@SEAS offers two different research opportunities: The first is funded by the Columbia Engineering Dean’s Office and is available only to SEAS undergraduate and master’s students. The second is a NSF-funded supplemental grant, Research Experience for Undergraduates. Summer@SEAS REU positions are open to all undergraduate students, and we particularly encourage students from other universities to apply for these positions.

Summer@SEAS also offers a summer enrichment program, a series of weekly seminars and presentations including health and safety, faculty presentations, scientific writing and presentations, and graduate school/academic and industry panels. Seminars take place during the work day and faculty encourage students to take time to participate in these programs. Students are also strongly encouraged to prepare posters for the annual Science and Engineering Research Symposium, which takes place early in the fall semester.

While there is no deadline for submitting applications, early applications are encouraged as students will be offered positions on a first-come first-served basis.

Dean’s Office Fund

The Summer@SEAS Dean’s Office Fund offers summer research experience through 40 internship positions in SEAS labs. You may apply to the Dean’s Office Fund if you are currently an undergraduate or master’s student. Depending on your particular interests, previous experience may not be necessary. Students are expected to work full-time for the duration of the program, so participation in this program is not compatible with attending summer school, working at another job, or any other serious time commitment.

The internship usually ranges from eight to 12 weeks.

Participants in the Dean’s Office Fund receive a stipend ranging between $4,000 and $8,000.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. Once you have completed your application and identified your research areas of interest, your application materials will be reviewed and forwarded to the research groups in which you are interested. Faculty will make final decisions and notify students accordingly. Please use only your Columbia email address for all communications regarding the Summer@SEAS Dean’s Office Fund Program.

You will need the following materials to complete your application:

1. An unofficial copy of your transcript, which you can copy from SSOL.
2. Two recommendation letters addressing your suitability for this summer fellowship.
3. An up-to-date resume.
4. A brief personal statement about your interests in the research group(s) you have identified.

Once accepted, you will be required to:

1. Work in the designated lab for 10 weeks following Memorial Day (unless otherwise agreed upon with the faculty/P.I. in the research group).
2. Not work, volunteer, or study anywhere else.
3. Participate in the Summer Enrichment Program as part of the Summer@SEAS Dean’s Office Fund Program.
4. Participate in the Science and Engineering Summer Research Poster Symposium, which is held early in the fall semester.

Participants in the Summer@SEAS Dean’s Office Fund receive a stipend ranging between $4,000 and $8,000, which can be used for living and housing expenses as housing is not included. Summer housing is available in several of the residential halls. Housing applications for summer 2015 will be available February 20, 2015. See more information, rates, and applications here.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Columbia Engineering offers summer research experience for undergraduate students in all years who are interested in gaining some hands-on practical experience in the art of research. You may apply to the Summer@SEAS REU’s if you are currently a junior, sophomore or first year student, and a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a permanent resident of the United States.
