Larry Xiao

Lary Xiao

Larry Xiao is from Plano, a quiet suburb in the heart of Texas. Having grown up in the hot Texas heat, Larry enjoys grilling at frequent barbecue get-togethers and is a passionate beach volleyball enthusiast.
Larry has spent his last two years studying at the Texas Academy of Math and Science (TAMS), where he discovered his interest in the intersection of engineering and social entrepreneurship. During his time at TAMS, Larry has done research in a materials science lab, investigating the chemical modification of natural fibers in polymer-based composites. As a result of his work, he has been recognized as a semi-finalist in the Intel STS Competition while also holding multiple publications in international journals. His experiences in the lab have helped him realize that his passions lie elsewhere, enabling him to pursue his interests in other academic fields. At Columbia, Larry plans to major in applied mathematics with the hope of creating a positive social impact for those that are less fortunate.
In his free time, Larry enjoys fine seafood dining, going out with friends, and swimming. At Columbia, he plans to get involved with the Columbia University Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club and try his hand at other forms of martial arts. Larry also hopes to pursue his interests in singing and expand his community outreach.
