Prospective Students
About Applying
Eligibility Requirements
The basic requirement for admission as a graduate student is the
bachelor's degree received from an institution of acceptable standing.
Ordinarily, the applicant will have majored in the field in which
graduate study is intended, but in certain programs preparation in a
related field of engineering or science is acceptable. The applicant
will be admitted only if the undergraduate record shows promise of
productive and effective graduate work.
The M.S. is required for admission into the Ph.D. and Eng.Sc.D. degree programs. A student who holds an appropriate bachelor's degree in engineering may apply for admission for study for either the M.S. only or M.S. leading to Ph.D.
Consideration for admission will be based not only on the completion of earlier courses of study, but also upon the quality of the record presented and upon such evidence as can be obtained concerning the candidate's personal fitness to pursue professional work.
Additional ApplicationsIt is against school policy to apply to more than one program/department at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, (SEAS) per term. Do not submit more than one application per term otherwise all applications may be discarded. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Graduate Student Services at for clarification.
Application Requirements
The following materials must accompany the application:
- $70.00 non-refundable application fee
- Official transcript from every post-secondary institution attended
- Three recommendation letters
- Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test Scores
(Scores are valid for 5 years) - Personal statement
- Resumé or Curriculum Vitae
Additional Requirements
If you meet the following criteria you must submit additional material(s) as indicated:
-
Official GRE Physics Subject Test Score
- Official GRE Computer Science Subject Test score. The Mathematics or Physics Subject exams are acceptable alternatives if the student's major field of undergraduate study was not computer science.
International applicants or applicants whose undergraduate degree was received in a country in which English is not the official and spoken language must meet the following requirements:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), official scores required (Scores are valid for 2 years).
- Official transcript from every post-secondary institution attended, sent from the institution, issued in English in a sealed envelope.
- Official copies of diploma/degree certificates.
- Translation of the official transcript(s) and degree/diploma certificate(s) is required if the institution(s) you attended does not issue transcripts in English. The translation must be conducted by a reputable service provider and must be sent in addition to the official transcript in the original language. Personal transcript translations will not be accepted.
Candidates should not submit copies of awards, publications, or financial documentation since submission of these extra materials will not enhance chances of being admitted. Documents submitted will not be returned.
Special Applications / Reactivation
SEAS does not defer admission.
Reactivation
Candidates who have applied and were admitted to SEAS, but did not
attend, may reactivate their applications for one of the two terms
following their original application. Candidates who do not request
reactivation within the year are required to submit a new application
as materials are discarded one year after submission. Please be aware
that candidates who reactivate their applications are essentially
reapplying for admission.
Previously denied or incomplete applicants cannot use the reactivation application and must submit a new application for admission.
Reactivation applicants may apply online.
Current Students
Current SEAS students who would like to be considered for a new degree
program should submit the Current Graduate Students Application.
Current students should not submit a new application, as this will only
delay the processing of their applications.
Reactivation and Current Student applicants apply online.

One-Term Special Students
This category exists primarily for two kinds of students:
- Those who are interested in a particular field, but are uncertain if they would like to complete an entire degree program.
- Those who have begun the application process but need more time to fulfill all application requirements.
One term special students are allowed to register for a maximum of six graduate credits. The six credits can either be taken within one term as two courses, or broken up into two terms with one course per term. However, under no circumstances will one term special students be allowed to complete more than six graduate credits or two semesters of course work without the permission of the Assistant Dean.
Students who take courses through the one term special and who later matriculate are usually allowed to apply those credits to their degree program. However, students are advised to check with the department that they plan to apply to, before they register, to confirm that the courses that they plan to take will be applicable to that program.
Registration for one term special students generally takes place within the first three days of classes for the given term. Students interested in applying as one term specials must come to the Office of Graduate Student Services, 524 S.W. Mudd, 500 West 120th Street to complete the One-Term Special Application and to submit the application fee. For additional information on this program you may call (212) 854-6456 or e-mail .
