Class of 2013 Sets New Records

Reflecting another record year for applications, The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science has sent out letters of admission to only 14 percent of its applicants, making the Class of 2013 the most selective in the School's history.
"I am particularly pleased that this class, which is the most selective ever, also represents the most academically gifted and the most broadly diverse group of young people ever admitted to Columbia SEAS," said Gerald A. Navratil, Interim Dean of the School.
For the first time, more than 40 percent of the admitted class are women and 31 percent are under-represented students of color (African American, Hispanic, and Native American). The students come from 43 states and 42 countries.
A record 4,154 applications were received, an increase of an astounding 21 percent over last year. Similarly, the number of applications for early decision admission was up 20 percent above last year's record levels. The selectivity rate of 14.42 percent this year was 3 percent more selective than last year.
"Each year our School appeals to more and more high school seniors because we offer a unique curriculum that combines academic excellence, the common experience of our signature first-year community-based learning design course, and courses in the famed Core Curriculum, together with improved financial aid, and more extensive outreach to under-represented applicant groups," said Navratil.
