Carnegie Mellon Honors Prof. Nayar
Shree Nayar, the T. C. Chang Professor of Computer Science, at The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, received the Carnegie Mellon University Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement Award for his work in computer vision and graphics.
Professors Win Nearly $8M in Grants
The National Institutes of Health has renewed a $2.8 million grant over five years for Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, professor of biomedical engineering. Her colleague Paul Sajda, an associate professor in biomedical engineering, has won more than $3 million grants for two research projects. Jingyue Ju, professor of chemical engineering and Director, Center for Genome Technology & Biomolecular Engineering, Columbia Genome Center, has won a $1.8 million three-year grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute.
Recent Faculty & Student Awards
Several faculty members and a graduate student have received awards this fall, including teaching awards and funding for ongoing projects. The winners include Professors Harish Krishnaswamy, Adam Sobel, Mischa Schwartz, John E. Taylor, George Deodatis and graduate student Miklos Bergou.

Prof. Heinz Elected VP of Optical Society
Prof. Heinz has been elected by The Optical Society (OSA) as its 2010 vice president. By accepting the vice presidency, Heinz makes a four-year commitment to OSA’s Board of Directors.
Civil Engineering adjunct professor Theodore Zoli has won a MacArthur Genius Award. The bridge engineer is one of 24 recipients of the $500,000 award given by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Prof. Anastassiou Wins NIH Award
Electrical Engineering Professor Dimitris Anastassiou has won an $800,000 award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to discover biological mechanisms responsible for psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Joining Anastassiou as second principal investigator is Maria Karayiorgou, professor of psychiatry and medical genetics at the Columbia University Medical Center.
