Columbia, NYC Launch Data Sciences Institute

Bring on the data deluge. Columbia University, in a partnership with New York City, has launched the Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering to fill the explosive need for the acquisition and analysis of “big data.” MORE

Columbia Engineering and MIT are on a collaborative mission to explore “space weather” by using experiments here on Earth. Scientists from both institutions have received a grant to jointly develop and test models of space weather. MORE

Electrical Engineering Ph.D. candidates Michael Lekas and Sunwoo Lee have won a major fellowship to develop devices to enable more versatile wireless circuits that can operate at many different frequencies while also being integrated with existing silicon chip technology. MORE

Making Computer Translation More Meaningful

Computer Science Ph.D. candidate Kristen Parton is working hard to help people understand each other better by making computers translate foreign languages more accurately. Her research focuses on how machine translation (MT) impacts cross-lingual search. MORE
