Alum Takes Columbia to Space

NASA astronaut and SEAS alumnus Michael Massimino ’84, along with six other astronauts, has returned to earth safely after a successful 11-day mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.

He took Columbia mementoes to space with him, and displays them below in a photo gallery he shares with a special message for his fellow alumni, who gathered last week for Columbia Reunion Weekend.

Hello, Classmates!

In honor of our 25th Reunion, I took some special items with me into space last month on-board Space Shuttle Atlantis.

These items included a Columbia Engineering t-shirt signed by current students and faculty that was stowed with our crew’s official flight items, a second Columbia shirt that I was able to have in my clothing locker and was able to wear in space (we are only allowed to take one personal shirt with a school or organization logo on it and I chose mine to be a Columbia shirt), and a Columbia logo which I flew inside of my flight notebook, which was in my pocket throughout the flight (except when I was spacewalking).

I took pictures of the shirt and logo in space and, hopefully, you will get a chance to see them. This was my way to honor our school for the wonderful education and opportunities that she provided for us, along with my honoring all of you for all of the great friendships and memories that we have together.

All my best,

Mike Massimino
